About Karen Huie, LMFT

Hello! Thank you for being here. My name is Karen Huie. I am a Filipino-American marriage and family therapist (LMFT) who has been supporting youth and adults since 2018. I obtained my Master of Science in Counseling from San Diego State University with the intention of cultivating and supporting meaningful change in our society.
Through my experience of working with a variety of populations in different settings, I believe I work best with depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, sexuality, and gender related issues. I especially connect well with women, LGBTQIA+, military family members, geeks/gamers with social anxiety and multiracial individuals due to my own lived experience. The modalities I use are customized to the goals we establish with one another during our first session. I currently utilize a mix of ACT, DBT, Narrative, CBT, Play Therapy and expressive art techniques in my practice because I have found the philosophies and interventions from these modalities to be impactful in my own life. I am a therapist who actively remains informed of the systems around us because of the ways they impact our experience of ourselves and our community.

My approach to counseling is providing you a warm and supportive environment where there is no right or wrong way for you to share what you are experiencing. I believe we will be the most successful in our work together if we are able to build a strong and honest relationship between us, share a sense of responsibility in the process, and engage fully on both of our ends. There will be times where I, from a place of care, will challenge you if I believe you are engaging in a thought or behavior that is not serving you. There will be times where I will be a validating and listening ear for you. There may even be times where we just laugh at the absurdity of it all. It’s impossible for a therapist to not bring their personalities into therapy, and mine frequently show up through humor, warmth, validation, education, and empowerment.

As a true believer of work-life balance, you can find me doing a variety of side quests outside of work. I love seeing my friends and playing D&D, supporting the farmers market in my community, and volunteering as a park ranger. I also love thrifting, reading fiction, and trying new vegetarian recipes.
