About Makayla Miller, AMFT
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” — Carl Rogers
Hello! I’m Makayla, and I’m so glad you’re here. I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) working with clients across the lifespan, including children, adolescents, and adults. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and my Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Point Loma Nazarene University. My education and experience with diverse populations help me understand how culture, community, and social factors impact mental health.
I’ve had the privilege of working with children in general and special education classrooms, and began my clinical experience at a hospice, supporting clients of all ages and backgrounds through grief and life transitions. Working across developmental stages and with grief has taught me how people experience challenges differently throughout life, and how showing up with consistency, empathy, and support can make a meaningful difference. My goal in therapy is to create a space where clients feel truly heard, seen, and safe. You can expect a collaborative, person-centered approach that meets you where you are and honors your unique journey.
I work with clients navigating ADHD, autism, depression and anxiety, bipolar and mood disorders, OCD and ODD, grief, family and interpersonal challenges, stress and trauma, life transitions, career and chronic illness concerns, coping skills, self-esteem, play therapy needs, pregnancy and postpartum adjustments, women’s health and sports-related concerns, LGBTQ+ issues, and divorce.
I use evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), attachment-based approaches, and grief-focused therapy. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and open to faith-sensitive discussions when relevant.
When I’m not sitting in the therapist chair, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exploring San Diego’s coffee shops and food spots, being with nature, and experiencing art in all its forms.
